Some new information about the two biggest titles from ID Software.

http://www.shacknews...thinks-id-ready

"Our studio has grown a lot, not just in size but also in design and art process, and even a technology standpoint," he said. "John [Carmack] has admitted he can't do everything on his own. There are a lot of smart guys that are required to be able to make a game these days. He can't just lock himself up in a room, come out with an engine, and say okay, make a game with this."

He went on to say

"We have Quake; we have Wolfenstein," said Kim. "If people want that, we have the IPs to deliver it. And we have a different approach now; we're forging a new path. I think we can freshen those things up...we don't have anything in the works right now but I think when we start talking about different things we can do with the other properties that we have I hope people are receptive to what we want to do and what we think would be fun for players to experience coming out of id Software."

What do you guys think? I'm getting excited already! :P

RTCW / W:ET Live - 2011 Update #1

This is the first part of the RTCW / W:ET Live update article series.

First of all let me answer the obvious questions: Why even make articles about a title that is probably never going to be produced, and why even dedicate a section of the forum to this?

1) Speculation is fun.
2) I probably wouldn't speculate if the title hadn't been mentioned many times before by id (read the former thread here.)

To recap: John Carmack and other people at id (notably Todd Hollenshead) have been talking about W:ET Live as a possibility.

In 2008, Carmack stated that "if Quake Live is successful, the next thing that we might look at is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory", also noting that he didn't see how you would include ads for modern products in a WW2 game.
Carmack later said "… we've tossed around the idea of taking the Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory game - which was actually always more popular than Q3A in the online space - and doing a similar treatment to it with the experience we've gained here". According to Carmack, W:ET Live's future would depend on Quake Live's success.

After opening the BETA of Quake Live, Hollenshead stated that "Probably, the next thing would be Wolfenstein Enemy Territory…"

Since Todd Hollenshead's March 2009 statement about W:ET Live (he mentioned the possibility of the game because of the overwhelming response Quake Live had received when the BETA opened), id has been pretty silent about the project.
This is not unusual for id (see the development of Wolfenstein, fx) but what may or may not bode well for RTCW / W:ET Live is that seemingly, the game would only be considered if Quake Live was successful. And seeing that the previous ad-based business model pretty much failed, and that we haven't heard much, if anything about the viability of the premium business model for Quake Live, I don't think that they will consider W:ET Live until / if they make Quake Live profitable. Or will they?

The very latest of possible hints:

Now, please note that this is just speculation.

An interesting snippet from a 1UP video interview of Tim Willits, when talking about what games they are working on at id (from September 2nd 2010)

"… we have Quake Live, which we just launched our pro service, so those guys are busy working on that, and then there are some people that we're adding for something that I'm not at liberty to discuss."

If you watch the video (from 00:53) and listen to the way he says it, it's pretty clear that those people that they're adding are somehow affiliated with Quake Live, yet it's a secret project. RTCW Live anyone?

What do you think? I'll keep you guys updated if I find something new. Feel free to post if you've found something new as well :)

Goodbye Wolfenstein Zone, Hello Defused.nu

Hello everyone (or the few of you who still check the site from time to time). :)

For some time I've been wanting to do something new. Wolfenstein Zone - I didn't see a future for it, and I didn't have the passion to continue running the site down the path it was set on.
So what I have done instead is simply taking the foundation of Wolfenstein Zone and build upon it a new site with a completely new path. A fresh start, a breath of fresh air if you will.

This site is not called Wolfenstein Zone, as you can see - the new name is both a symbolic and a practical thing. (It is much more than a name change, however). Wolfenstein Zone was bound to its name. I had been wanting to make it broader, or at least more adaptable. Broader in the sense that its name wasn't restricted to any one game or franchise. And adaptable in the sense that if a game flops, the site won't just go down the drain. It should be able to change its focus and / or deal with several different games at the same time without having an identity crisis.

Yes, this is a goodbye to Wolfenstein Zone as we know it. And at the same time it is perhaps the logical evolution of the site, and not its death.

This new website is called "defused.nu". "Defused" will be a place mainly focusing on objective-based / fast-paced games ("Dynamite defused" <- cheap :) but still effective). It will also be a place where I hope to be able to, besides doing opinion pieces, make some investigative journalistic work just like in the good old days. And the site will have lots of great community features that I'm sure many people will appreciate.

Defused.nu is built upon great software from Invision Power Services. Users will be able to create their own blogs, for example, so there will probably be a lot of mini-communities inside the large community, which is going to be fun to watch.
All posts / members from Wolfenstein Zone have been imported. This also means that all the information Wolfenstein Zone contained (which could be of historical value to those interested :) is on this site as well.
You should be able to log into this new place with your old user details from Wolfenstein Zone. If there is any problem with this, please e-mail: defused (dot) nu (at) gmail (dot) com.

I hope people will appreciate this new project, see you on the boards,

Krollspell

By the way, in the next few days I'll probably be changing things around a bit (stuff like the portal and banner) and adding minor features. So it's still kind of a work in progress.
